Extended Essay!!!! DP Students!!!

How is the Research Question assessed?

Research question--The extent to which the focus of the essay is expressed and specified. This need not be in the form of a question. An example of an alternative form is a hypothesis( If..............).

Achievement level

You get( 0 ) if the research question is not stated in the early part of the essay or does not lend itself to systematic investigation in the context of an extended essay.

You get( )  if the research question is stated in the early part of the essay but not in a precise manner or the research question is clearly and precisely stated but is too broad in scope to be treated effectively within the word limit.

You (2 ) if the research question is clearly and precisely stated in the early part of the essay and is sharply focused, making it susceptible to effective treatment within the word limit.

Dear DP Students,

Before you write your Extended Essay Introduction, you are advised to carefully read how your introduction will be assessed. This is clearly shown below:

                                                                  Extended Essay

Writing the Introduction

The criterion assesses the extent to which the introduction makes clear how the research question relates to existing knowledge on the topic and explains how the topic chosen is significant and worthy of investigation.

                -  ( 0 ) If your introduction  shows little or no attempt to set the research question into context. There is little or no attempt to explain the significance of the topic.

                -  ( 1) If your introduction shows some attempt to set the research question into context. There is some attempt to explain the significance of the topic and why it is worthy of investigation.

                -  ( 2) If your introduction shows how the research question is clearly demonstrated. The introduction clearly explains the significance of the topic and why it is worthy of investigation.

The Abstract

An abstract not exceeding 300 words must be included with the essay submitted. It does not serve as an introduction, but presents an overview of the extended essay, and should, therefore, be written last.

 The abstract should state clearly:

  • the research question being investigated

  • the scope of the investigation

  • the conclusion(s) of the extended essay.

The abstract should be typed or word processed on one side of a sheet of paper, and placed immediately after the title page.

Gerund or Present Participle

The difference between gerunds and present participles

Gerunds and present participles may look the same (they are both the "ing" form of a verb) but they have different functions. Gerunds are verbs that function as nouns; present participles are verbs that can function as adjective, adverbs or verb phrases. E.g

He enjoys playing cricket. ("Playing" is a gerund, as it functions as a noun and is the object of the sentence – it is the object of the verb "enjoys").

He is playing cricket.  ("Playing" is a present participle, as it functions as part of a verb phrase that describes what the boy is doing in relation to the subject "cricket")

Now guess!!!!!

I -I enjoy running.      ( gerund/Present Participle)

2-Stay away from running water. ( gerund/ Present Participle)

3-I admire the woman finishing the report.    ?????????????????

4-Traveling might satisfy your desire for new experiences. ????????????

5-We postponed making any decision.  ??????????????????????????
